It was the end of the road for Enugu Rangers and Rivers United at the CAF champions League as both teams exited the competition.
Champions of the Nigeria Professional football League, Enugu Rangers lost on aggregate 5-3 to Zamalek despite winning the tie 2-1 at the Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium in Enugu on Sunday.
Having been flattened 4-1 in the first leg in Cairo last weekend, Rangers needed a three-goal margin win to pull through after losing the first leg 4-1 in Egypt. Tope Olusesi opened scoring for Rangers but Zamalek pulled back.
Though Godwin Aguda restored Rangers lead, it was as pointed out, just cosmetic as they crashed out on a 5-3 aggregate scoreline and would now have to settle to play in the less fancied CAF Confederation Cup.
On Saturday, Rivers United also got expelled from the CAF Champions League after losing to Sudanese club, Al-Merrikh, 4-0, despite taking a 3-0 advantage in the first leg.
