It was a good start for Nigeria, as nine of the country’s participants lead the groups in the first round of the 2017 ITTF Challenge Series, Nigeria Open, at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos. Nigeria have over 60 players at the $42,000 tournament.
In the men’s singles qualifying round, which has 24 groups, Kazeem Adeniyi tops Group 2 while Kazeem Makanjuola sits atop Group 3. Akanbi Rilwan tops Group 4 while Omotayo Olajide tops Group 7 and Solanke Azeez tops Group 10. Each group topper has two points after a match.
In the women’s singles qualifying round, which has 12 groups, Aminat Fashola is on top of Group 1 while Cecilia Akpan leads Group 4 and Esther Oribamishe sits atop Group 6. Group 8 is led by Janet Effiom. Each group winner in this category has two points after one match.
Meanwhile, Funke Oshonaike has said she is not under pressure to win the women’s singles title at the competition.
